Fantasy Fairies
By: Artemis Phoenix

Fairy figurines and fairy statues often decorate homes today...but caution...Do NOT offend a fairy!  Good solid advice,as fairy folk, you see, can be incredibly helpful or down right nasty and malicious sometimes, causing families to carry fairy curses throughout generations. These darker fairies are probably more generally known as gothic fairies..more on them later.

They are far more than mere elementals, representing and controlling the four alchemical elements of nature - air, fire, water and earth.  Fairies have personalities, solidity, emotions and can feel pain and joy.  What mischief they cause depends on how they are treated and each type expects different from us.

The Land of Fairy is in the astral plane, a place somewhere both within and without of our world, separated by a thin veil of consciousness.  A parallel or alternate universe...one which it is said, also contains demons, angels, ghosts and other 'next-dimensional'beings. Fairies have existed and been believed in for as long as humans have been here.  They have been obvserved as seasonal assistants to the gods, elemental spirits or even demigods.  Although traditionally, no culture or
tribe has been found that doesn't believe in the existence of beings in this dimension, the hard science of math and physics have lagged behind.  Today, though the arena of metaphysics is gaining attention and authority.  The worlds of quantum physics and energetics are most definitely real and thriving and its within that world that fairies exist.

Fairies often will aid human work, ritual or magic. Its all about how they are approached..and that depends on the type of fairy and what we want from them.  People use meditation, magick, astral travel and wish-craft to connect with fairy folk.

It's not that they aren't around...it's that humans have failed to develop good working relationships with fairies, much like they often forget to bond with animals and other aspects of nature. During this past century in particular, fairies have become 'pure fantasy'and in most cases, not believed in.  So of course they are now rarely seen, being treated so off-handedly.  In order to see them one has to learn to see not only with their eyes, but with their heart and mind as well.

Although fairies belong to the world, the fairy lore of Ireland and Britain is probably the richest and best documented on the planet.  Geography probably has a lot to do with this situation as up until the past five hundred years, both parts of Britain and in particular Ireland were too insular to be on regular trade routes.  Fairy is however a universal phenomena, differing only in names and clothing of the various cultures.

 Celtic-Irish-Scottish Fairies

In Ireland, there was a deep belief in fairies and working with them right up until the middle of the 20th century.  Fairies are called sidhe (shee), Wee Ones, The Good Folk, the Little People to even Them Who Prowl.  The Irish fairy lore is probably the deepest with stories of interaction bewteen humans and these beings of an alternate realm.  Its said that fairies would come to humans for help with healing or for food and shelter during the cold winter months. Most of them lived in burghs
which are underground dwellings.

There are mysterious recounts of islands off the coast of Ireland where fairies live.  These islands, it is said, can appear and disappear at the blink of an eye.  There are those who it's been said who dare to step onto the islands, who are never seen again.  Others return with the blessings of the fairies laden with fairy gifts.
